Gateshead Millennium Bridge

Gateshead Millennium Bridge

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth the Second on 7 May 2002 although it was opened to the public on 17 September 2001.
Due to it’s unique tilting method of lifting to allow river traffic to pass underneath it has acquired the nickname the “Blinking eye bridge” because of the resemblance to an eyelid opening and closing. There are some pictures showing the bridge opening which usually occurs at midday, and when necessary for vessels.
