Jesmond Old Cemetery

Jesmond Old Cemetery, Newcastle.

The Jesmond old cemetery was opened in 1836, is one of Newcastle's oldest cemetery's and is the final resting place for many prominent local people.
There was a wall built around the cemetery which is 9 feet tall with heavy & tall iron gates at the entrances, this was necessary as in the 19th century body snatching was rife on Tyneside, during this time corpses were exhumed from fresh graves and sold to some of the most respected members of society - the medical profession.
