South Shields Groyne Pier and Lighthouse

South Shields Groyne Pier and Lighthouse.

The Groyne pier (Groyne is a French word for stone structure) and lighthouse are near the Littlehaven beach in South Shields.
The Groyne was built in the 16th century to help protect the beach from erosion.
The lighthouse has a distinctive hexagonal shape & red colour and is held up by 12 iron legs.
The lighthouse was built between 1861 and 1867 and is still in use today.
