St Mary's Cathedral Newcastle


St Mary's Cathedral, Newcastle. 

St Mary's catholic cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle and is the seat of the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle.
The cathedral was built between 1842 and 1844.
It was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin in the Gothic Revival style and is now a grade one listed building. Pugin was also responsible for designing churches in Ireland and Australia as well as the interior of the Palace of Westminster.     
There is a monument outside the cathedral dedicated to Newcastle born Cardinal Basil Hulme, who was a former Archbishop of Westminster, the statue was opened by Queen Elizabeth 11 in 2002.
